The cool Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean shapes the maritime climate and provides refreshing breezes that lend the wines their characteristic elegance.

The region encompasses a wide variety of terroirs: from coastal locations with salty sea breezes to sheltered mountain valleys with warmer conditions. This diversity allows for the cultivation of almost all international grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and the South African specialty Pinotage dominate among the red wines, while Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay shine among the white wines.

The wine region is divided along the Atlantic into the areas of Durbanville and Swartland, above False Bay into Constantia and Stellenbosch, and in the east of South Africa into Paarl and Tulbagh. The Coastal Region counts as the most important wine-growing area in South Africa for the cultivation of quality wines. Stellenbosch and Paarl in particular are known worldwide for their quality red wines. In general, the wine region has a very clayey soil composition, which helps to store water for the vines. In some areas, there are calcareous and stony soils, which distinguish the wines with special flavor notes and aromas. The grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Sauvignon blanc, and Chenin blanc thrive here in particular.
