Coastal Region
The Coastal Region is South Africa's most important and diverse wine-growing area. It stretches along the west coast from Cape Town to Walker Bay and includes legendary areas such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Constantia, and Franschhoek. The cool Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean shapes the maritime climate and provides refreshing breezes that lend the wines their characteristic elegance.
The region encompasses a wide variety of terroirs: from coastal locations with salty sea breezes to sheltered mountain valleys with warmer conditions. This diversity allows for the cultivation of almost all international grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and the South African specialty Pinotage dominate among the red wines, while Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay shine among the white wines.
The winemakers of the Coastal Region combine South African winemaking tradition with international expertise. Many practice sustainable viticulture and focus on organic farming. The wines are powerful yet balanced, with pronounced fruit and mineral freshness. The Coastal Region stands for world-class wines with a distinctive character – South African authenticity meets international quality!
