Flor de Cana Rum Grand Reserve 7 years old
Flor de Caña Grand Reserve 7 Años is an aged Nicaraguan rum that shows what tropical aging does to a distillate: denser, but never heavy.
Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua has been distilling rum in Chichigalpa, at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano, since 1890. The microclimate measurably accelerates barrel aging—seven years in Nicaragua are aromatically equivalent to a significantly longer maturation period in colder regions. The company is Fairtrade-certified and carbon-neutral, which is still the exception in the rum segment.
On the nose, roasted coconut, vanilla, and a hint of fig. On the palate, honey and dark chocolate follow; the texture is smooth without any harshness, the finish long and slightly sweet. No peat, no aggressive oak—an approachable yet characterful rum.
The aroma profile is best enjoyed neat at room temperature. Adding a large ice cube slows down the melting process and opens up the sweetness. As a base for a Cuba Libre or Mojito, it offers more depth than most younger bottlings.
