d'Arenberg d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie

A powerful McLaren Vale Shiraz with an unusual guest in the cellar: 10% Viognier, fermented together with the Shiraz, lifts the fruit and gives the wine a floral lightness that surprisingly breaks up its dark structure.

d'Arenberg is one of Australia's oldest family-owned wineries – located in McLaren Vale since 1912 and now run by Chester Osborn, the fourth generation. The winery is known for its artisanal winemaking: grapes are traditionally foot-trodden, and the wine is aged in used oak barrels. No high-tech cellar, just deliberately slow processes.

In the glass, the Laughing Magpie displays a deep ruby red color. The nose offers aromas of dark plum, blackberry, and black pepper, along with a hint of violet and white peach – the unmistakable Viognier fingerprint. On the palate, it is juicy and full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, slightly spicy finish.

Serving suggestion: Served at 16–18 °C, it pairs well with grilled lamb chops, pulled pork burgers, or a strong mountain cheese. Drinking window: now until 2028.
