d'Arenberg d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz

A McLaren Vale Shiraz with history: The Dead Arm takes its name from a fungal disease that affects old vines — and it is precisely these old vines that provide the concentration that has made this wine a fixture in the Australian wine calendar for decades.

d'Arenberg is a family-run winery in McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide, operating since 1912 and always known for its traditional, artisanal methods: hand-harvesting, open fermentation tanks, and traditional pounding. The Dead Arm is their flagship wine—aged for 18 months in new and used oak barrels, made entirely from Shiraz.

In the glass, it displays deep blackberry and black plum, underpinned by licorice, fennel seeds, and dried rose petals. The oak contributes vanilla and a hint of cedar without overpowering the fruit. The tannins are earthy and firm, with a mineral structure and a long, spicy finish.

Since the 1980s, Chester Osborn, the fourth generation of the family, has continued the legacy with creative ideas and an unwavering pursuit of perfection. At d'Arenberg, traditional winemaking methods are highly valued. Every step, from hand-harvesting to the use of open fermentation tanks and basket presses, is carried out with meticulous care. A commitment to sustainable farming and environmental protection underscores the dedication to the highest quality. The d'Arenberg wine portfolio is diverse and includes some of Australia's most renowned wines.
