Escarpment Winery —
Pinot Noir from gravel soil in Martinborough

Escarpment Winery was founded in 1999 by Larry McKenna, one of the pioneers of New Zealand Pinot Noir. The winery is located on the alluvial gravel terraces of Te Muna Road in Martinborough — a region in the south of the North Island whose cool climate and well-drained soils are reminiscent of Burgundian conditions without imitating them.

Today, winemaker Tim Bourne is in charge of the cellar. His approach follows the fundamental principle that Larry McKenna originally brought with him: minimal intervention, maximum fidelity to origin. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris are created here as distinctive expressions of their terroir—shaped by pebbles, wind, and long autumn days that keep aromatics and acidity in balance.

Escarpment's wines are not loud showpieces. They need a glass, some time, and ideally an occasion that justifies both—a good piece of lamb, mature Comté cheese, or a quiet evening without distractions.
