Benromach is one of the smallest distilleries in Speyside – and precisely for that reason, it distills according to its own rules. Since 1898, a single malt has been produced in Forres, in the north of Scotland, that deliberately avoids the region's smooth mainstream: lightly peated, spicy, with a subtle smoky note not typically associated with Speyside.

In 1998, Gordon & MacPhail, one of Scotland's most traditional whisky families, took over the disused distillery and brought it back to life. Since then, two men have distilled the entire annual supply by hand – not an automated large-scale operation, but craftsmanship in the truest sense. Maturation takes place in carefully selected casks, including ex-bourbon and sherry wood, which gives the whiskies their characteristic depth of dried fruit, vanilla, and smoke.
