Deckert Winery

Klaus Remo Deckert's winery is the first privately owned, full-time winery in the former East Germany. Founded on July 1, 1990, it has grown into the largest private producer in the region. The winery is located directly in the historic town center of Freyburg/Unstrut, a town associated with the Jahn family and renowned for its wines. Remnants of the historic town wall can still be seen on Schützenstraße, directly opposite the winery. Here, we also conduct wine tastings for up to 60 people. The vineyard site—the soil, the temperatures, the slope, and the rainfall distribution—are the key factors that essentially determine the character of the wine and give it its uniqueness. Like most vineyards in the Saale-Unstrut wine region, our vineyards have weathered limestone soil. The ideal balance of sunshine and cool temperatures in the Saale-Unstrut region results in delicate and crisp wines. However, deep frosts in winter and late frosts in spring still pose a risk. The location of our vineyards on flat or hillside slopes creates a mild microclimate. With approximately 500 mm of rainfall annually, our vineyards are among the driest in Germany. Our average yields are around 60 hl/ha.
