Bolgheri Castle
The history of Castello di Bolgheri dates back to 1200. The estate now comprises 130 hectares of land, 50 of which are planted with vines, all within the Bolgheri DOC appellation. In 1997, the vineyards were replanted with the DOC-approved grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. The remainder of the property is largely planted with olive trees. Bolgheri's most famous neighbors are San Guido, with its Sassicaia, and Ornellaia. These two wineries have played a key role in establishing the reputation of this relatively young DOC region. In the past, Castello di Bolgheri delivered all of its grapes to these two estates. Then in 1997, Federico Zileri Dal Verme, with oenologist Alessandro Dondi at his side, took over the reins of the Tenuta, and now an exclusive part of it is being produced in their own cellar.
