Bodegas Edetaria
Edetària – named after an ancient Roman trade route, the charismatic Joan Lliberia chose this name for his small winery in the heart of Terra Alta. After several years as an internationally successful manager, Joan faced a decision about ten years ago: either continue his managerial career or take over his family's small winery and make something of it. Since he had always preferred helping his grandfather in the vineyard, the decision was quickly made. In 2003, he invested his savings in a successful new building – and within just a few years, Edetària was already considered the best winery in Terra Alta. This success is largely due to the unique vineyard sites, spread across just under 30 hectares in an exceptional terroir with five different soil types. For his white wines, Joan is considered a pioneer of the indigenous Garnacha Blanca variety, which is complemented by Viognier. Equally unusual is the red Garnacha Peluda, a special variety full of intense fruit and minerality. Most of these vines were planted by Joan's grandfather more than 50 years ago. He would surely be proud that his wines are now among the best in Spain, and that in the current Spanish wine guide, Guía Peñín, his 2005 Edetaria is even the highest-rated white wine in Spain.
