Castle Winery of the Order of Malta
The Mailberg terroir arises from the interplay of the fresh continental climate of the northern Weinviertel region and the sheltered location of the vineyards in the small valley, also known as the "Mailberg Valley." The soil also significantly influences the wine's characteristics. Mailberg's soils are very calcareous and covered with loamy sands and loess. This promotes the ripening of the wines and the development of a delicate, harmonious acidity. Situated south of the 49th parallel and east of the 16th meridian, at an altitude of 217 meters above sea level, Mailberg boasts an excellent location for the production of powerful red wines and characterful white wines. Around 1,800 hours of sunshine per year, average annual rainfall of approximately 450 mm, and water-retentive soils provide ideal conditions. The vineyards: Since 1969, the estate of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta has been managed by the Lenz Moser winery. The vineyards comprise a total of twelve individual sites, bearing names such as Antlasberg, Blickenberg, Hochlüssen, Hofbreite, Hundschupfen, Janning, Rosenpoint, Rumpling, Schafflerhof, Vösenau, Zeiselberg, and Zuckerschlee. All vineyards are trained according to the Lenz Moser high-trellis system. The estate currently covers 50 hectares, with the oldest vineyard planted in 1970. Originally focused on Grüner Veltliner, red grape varieties were gradually added. These included Zweigelt and Merlot in 1973, and in 1982, the first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Lower Austria.
Lower Austria is Austria's largest wine-growing region, situated on the border with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
