However, it is always ensured that every technique has only a minimal impact on health and the environment surrounding us. Sangiovese Grosso—traditionally called Brunello here—is the only permitted grape variety of the DOCG, and organic farming allows the soil characteristics of these vineyards to shine through particularly clearly in the glass.

In the glass, it displays a classic Brunello profile: sour cherry and red currant, underpinned by tobacco, leather, and a hint of dried herbs. The tannins are ripe and firm, the acidity lively without being sharp, and the finish long and spicy. South of Montalcino and very close to the Lisini estate lies Tenuta Collosorbo. The vineyards are situated between 200 and 400 meters above sea level on the southern slopes of the Orcia Valley. Collosorbo is an old castle belonging to the Ciacci family. The wine cellar is housed in one wing of the building. It is well-equipped, spotlessly clean, and has a wonderful atmosphere. The wines are aged in young 50-hectoliter oak barrels. The estate comprises a total of 130 hectares of land, but only about a quarter of it is planted with vines. The winemaker is Attilio Pagni, who produces wines of rare finesse and elegance at Collosorbo.

The Rosso di Montalcino “Banditella” from Col d'Orcia is the younger brother of the great Brunello — more approachable in the drinking window, but with the same Sangiovese foundation from one of the most prestigious sites in central Italy.

Col d'Orcia is one of the most historic estates in Montalcino: The Franceschi family purchased the property in 1890, and in 1933 they presented their Brunello wines at one of Italy's first wine fairs in Siena.
