{"title":"Château Cos d\u0026#39;Estournel","description":"The estate was founded in the 19th century by the wine merchant Louis-Gaspard Estournel, whose specialty was the horse trade from Arabia and the wine trade to Arabia and India, essentially operating as a shuttle service. Estournel set himself the goal of producing the best wine in the world, adjacent to the highly regarded Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac, on the other side of the small Jalle de Breuil canal. To this end, he purchased the gravelly hills north of Lafite and began extensive construction. During his trading activities, he discovered that the unsold wine returned from India was better than the same wine left at the château. This prompted him to send all his wines on a sea voyage before selling them, as he preferred the improvement in quality to the increase in cost. He marked the wines of those years with an \u0026quot;R\u0026quot;: Retour des Indes, back from India, as a mark of quality. Initially, they were snapped up immediately. The estate is located in Saint-Estèphe in the south, directly on the border with Pauillac, on the first rise and opposite its sister estate, Château Cos Labory, on the \u0026quot;Route du Vin\u0026quot; (Wine Route). The sandy, siliceous soil retains sufficient moisture even in summer. In winter, the hillside location and the deep subsoil (formed in the Eocene epoch) prevent waterlogging. The vineyard covers 64 hectares; 60% is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% with Merlot, and 2% with Cabernet Franc.
